Making the Most of a Fall Birthday Trip Gone Bad

I’m going to do what you’re not supposed to do and mention my ex. Hey, what kind of blogger would I be if I didn’t also tell my troubling tales? All the better to entertain you. 😉 And besides, it’s all in good fun!

It all started with a Fall birthday roadtrip through New England with my then boyfriend. Sounds wonderful, right?

Well, I won’t get into all of the details. Let’s just say, it didn’t turn out how either of us expected.

We drove 4+ hours roundtrip from my home in Maine to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for a surprise birthday train ride at Mount Washington. However, the only surprise, dear reader, was that the train we were supposed to catch was pulling away just as we arrived…

Ah… Whatayagonnado? …. We would break up a week later.

Now, for the adventure part.

Turns out, the folks at the railway were really sweet and understanding. Or, maybe they just felt sorry for me. Either way, it gave me the chance to use my tickets for a future date.

The following week, I was back. Although, I wouldn’t return with Mr. X. Instead, I asked my dad to join me. We were long overdue for some father-daughter time, so it was perfect.

If you’re anything like me, you love exploring new places in the great outdoors. This next experience is for adventure enthusiasts.

Driving through the White Mountains to Mount Washington’s Cog Railway

Having lived in New England for over a decade, I’ve seen some incredible sights, from the rocky coast of Maine with its iconic lighthouses to the rolling green hills of Vermont. But, there’s something magical about New Hampshire and the drive through its White Mountains. It’s one of the most famous scenic routes in all of New England for a reason.

Every season gives the scenery a unique feel, but my favorite is in the Fall when you see foliage at its finest in unbelievably bright shades of red, orange, and gold. It’s seriously like an artist’s canvas.

When I first moved to New Hampshire, I had come from New York, and before that, California. My first New England Fall, I had never seen anything or anywhere more beautiful.

In October, you can see the summits dusted with early snow as you drive closer to the cog railway, adding to the mystique. This is one of the most stunning roadtrips you can take.

And just when you think it can’t get any lovelier, you finally arrive at a charming ole-timey railroad tucked away in the White Mountains- Mount Washington Cog Railway located at Marshfield Base Station. Your adventure has just begun!

Where is Marshfield Base Station Located?

The cog railway is on the western side of the mountain at Marshfield Base Station in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. You have to be careful with GPS, which doesn’t map out the location properly and may take you 50 miles out of the way on the eastern side of the mountain.

Detailed driving directions here.

What to Pack: Train Travel Essentials

An Unforgettable Adventure Riding Mount Washington’s Cog Train

So, if you haven’t heard about it yet, the Cog Railway has been chugging up Mount Washington since 1869, making it the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. They also make their trains in house and are independently owned. Pretty cool, right? 😉

It takes intrepid travelers like us straight up the steep slopes of Mount Washington to its peak, which, at 6,288 feet, happens to be the highest peak in the Northeastern U.S.

Creek in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

As someone who adores breathtaking scenery, riding this cog railway was definitely a Fall bucket-list moment for me. The views from the train were nothing short of mesmerizing!

When we finally made it on the train, I breathed a big sigh of relief. This trip was already better than the last. Standing at the base of Mount Washington, looking up at the peak covered in mist, you can feel the anticipation building.

But, be prepared… Mount Washington also has a reputation for having some of the world’s most unpredictable (and ugliest) weather. But don’t let that intimidate you… it’s all part of the experience!

The beautiful scenery of Mount Washington in New Hampshire

Looking around, surrounded by mountains, I could not believe the stunning views. The train was also really charming, like one of those old-fashioned vintage steam engine trains.

The ride is approximately 3 hours: 1 hour going up, 1 hour at summit, and 1 hour going back down.

If you get hungry like I do, bring a snack and drinks. You can also buy snacks up at the Summit from May to mid-October or, (if you’re taking the Winter train) at Waumbeck Station from mid-October – May.

There are no restrooms on the train, so I recommend going at the train station beforehand or when you stop at the summit’s visitor center an hour into the ride.

The Ascent

The train slowly chugs out of the station, and almost immediately, you begin to feel the steepness of the ascent. The track tilts at an impressive angle.

As the cog train begins its climb up the slopes of Mount Washington, all I could think is… “this is otherworldly”. Not just the scenery but the historic train itself. I was in awe of the engineering marvel beneath me.

Our train conductor and guide, John, was nice, sharing fun facts throughout the trip. We were the last train ride of the season. He celebrated his 1,000th ride with us!

The conductor of the Mount Washington Train

The train’s cog mechanism locks into place, ensuring a steady, secure climb. Trust me, when you’re on that 37.41% incline, you’ll appreciate the brilliance of that design!

My dad and I were obsessed with the colorful foliage. The higher the train climbed, the more the scenery transformed. You’ll notice the once lush forests of spruce and fir trees starting to thin out, giving better views of the valleys below.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway train passing through a patch of Fall foliage in the White Mountains

At one point, the colors faded out and you started to see snow.

It was really cool to see how high up we were at that angle. The ride is slow and steady, giving you plenty of time to take in the views.

Because we went in the Fall, there was a mysterious beauty to the shifting clouds and the play of light on the mountain’s scenery.

The Alpine Zone

Continuing the ascent, the landscape becomes more rugged and wild. At 4,000′, it starts to get colder.  By 5,000′, the trees get smaller because it’s too cold for them to grow. As the train enters the “alpine zone”, you start to see the trees disappear entirely, replaced by hardy shrubs, grasses, and lichen that cling to the rocky terrain.

Taking Photos of Mount Washington’s Scenery

Along the ride, whether you have clear skies or not, take photos! The landscapes are so dramatic and interesting. And if you come in the Spring or Summer and get lucky, you might even be able to capture the stunning panoramic views with the vast expanse of the Presidential Range unfolding before you.

If you’re like me, you might want to take a camera. I even saw a few people with their big lenses, haha. It might get harder to use at the summit if the winds are harsh. If you do bring one, wear a camera strap.

Smartphones also have really good camera quality these days too… that is until your phone does automatic updates and the quality is diminished to the point of being forced to get a new phone. Currently in that predicament myself… ugh, so frustrating.

My Samsung 23 Ultra’s quality used to be at the envy of friends with iphones. That’s what I love about my good ole handheld point and shoot.

The Summit

And just like that, we finally arrived at the tippy top!

It’s a whole different world up there. It doesn’t hit you that you’re “on the top of New England”. The first thing we noticed is what a drastic difference the scenery and temperature is from where you boarded at the base.

The tracks frozen and covered with snow

The 360-degree views we saw that day weren’t what I was expecting at all… It’s frigid the time of year I went (mid-October), so it looked like what I imagined Antarctica to look like. Now, that I’ve since visited the 7th continent, I can honestly say this looked and felt even more freezing.. haha.

But, nevertheless, Mount Washington’s summit was nothing short of spectacular! The surroundings blew my mind, honestly.

So windy I almost blew away lol

What is there to do at Mount Washington’s summit?

When you get off, everyone goes into the Mount Washington State Park & Visitor Center to keep warm and grab a bite at the snack bar. You have about an hour to stretch your legs, use the restroom, eat, and take it all in.

My mom’s so cute, she packed a nice little lunch for us. My dad and I thought we’d have a nice picnic at the summit, which as you might have guessed, did not end up happening. Dad and I ate our picnic at a table inside instead.

Make sure to leave time to check out the Mount Washington Observatory, a museum and Tip-Top House, the oldest surviving building on the summit.

But, my dad and I had an even better idea. 😉 When the two of us are together, we’re trouble. During our Alaskan cruise a few years ago, we decided to take a dip in the icy cold water at Icy Straight Point (literally the name). My dad has this thing where he has to go in every body of water of every place he’s traveled to. Cold, warm, hot, doesn’t matter.. Of course, I’m easily influenced and went along with him.

As guess what? It was fuh-fuh-freezing. But if Alaska didn’t stop us, neither would this.

While other train passengers stayed inside the warm visitor center, we decided to walk around outside a bit and check out the summit.

Geeves and her dad posing at Mount Washington State Park sign at the summit

It was so windy we literally almost blew away, not joking. It’s the strongest wind you’ve experienced. It was like a scene from a movie. We couldn’t even hear each other talk.. we were screaming through the scowling wind.

For the record, any signs of Fall disappeared the moment we reached that mountain top. It was now full blown Winter… and she was fierce.

It was pretty windy, snowy, and foggy so I didn’t get to have one of those moments at the edge of a cliff where “I stood there and took it all in”, haha. I could only see up to a certain point.

Geeves outside at the summit of Mount Washington, cold

Be prepared, Mount Washington is foggy more than 300 days a year. You’ll learn why when you get up there. Won’t blow all the fun for ya. 😉

Up at the summit on a clear day, you can see into five states (New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York) and sometimes Canada and the Atlantic Ocean.

I think I was able to see more of the mountain range from the train, whose slow pace allows you to take in every detail.

What is the Weather Like at the Summit?

Not to scare you, but Mount Washington’s summit is famous for its extreme weather. Everyone (myself included) likes to poke fun at how it’s “the world’s worst weather”, but just because it’s funny, doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Year round, the weather is pretty unpredictable in the mountains. On your ride up and at the summit, you could experience rain, snow, and ice, even in the Summer. You can expect snow for sure from October to May/June.

When I went, it was in the 20’s (F) with a wind chill of 12 – 13F and winds of 50 mph. On any given day Mt. Washington can be as cold as the Arctic Circle. In fact, the highest temperature ever recorded on the summit was 72°F, while the lowest plunged to a frigid -47°F— without even factoring in the wind chill!

Geeves' dad posing with a Paul Bunion statue at Mount Washington State Park Visitor Center

In 1934, the summit had the highest surface wind speed not associated with a tornado or tropical cyclone (231 miles per hour). It still holds the record.

Just to give you an idea of the extreme conditions up here, elite hikers train here for Mt. Everest… even thought it’s not as high.. weather is equivalent. They test out their equipment.

If you’re not a fan of the cold, consider visiting in the summer where July’s temperatures average around 49°F at the summit. But, if you dress right, it’s not as bad as it sounds. I give clothing tips later.

Fall in New Hampshire

If you’re visiting New Hampshire for the first time, you’re in for a treat. The Granite State is perfect for a relaxing getaway. Read my blog to get ideas for your trip!

**Note that if you’re riding the Winter train (late October to May), you will not go to the summit. Instead, shorter trips will take you Waumbeck Station instead of Skyline (the summit from May – mid-October).

WARNING: This is one of the top 10 most dangerous hikes in US, not because of elevation, but because of poor visibility. Also, a lot of hikers don’t prepare themselves for weather and die.

Pro Tip: My family has been passing down Stanley insulated jugs for generations. Even my grandpa, (who was a coal miner) used to bring his on the job. They last for years and keep your hot stuff hot and your cold stuff cold the entire day. Fill it with something hot and yummy like soup, hot apple cider, or hot cocoa and pack for the ride or enjoy at the summit.

The Descent

After a restroom break, it was time to get back on the train. I have to say, the time spent at the summit was plenty of time for me.

As I descended back to the Base Station, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Sure, I hadn’t hiked to the summit, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing you’ve reached the top of Mount Washington, even if it was by train.

I’m so glad that I decided to take my dad. We ended up having such a fun time. The ride back down the mountain was just as thrilling, but in a different way as the scenery comes back to life.

With the engine now leading the way, you’ll have a front-row seat to the breathtaking views as you descend.

Overall, the Mount Washington Cog Railway is a one of a kind journey from beginning to end through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Northeast, combining history, engineering marvels, and natural beauty into one unforgettable ride.

What to Wear to on Mount Washington’s Cog Railway

Because of the steady drop in temperature from the base to the summit, it’s important to dress appropriately. Don’t be like all the young women around me who quickly regretted their wardrobe choices. Some were wearing flip flops while others were wearing skirts and shorts. (not joking) It’s better to peel off layers than to wish you’d brought more.

His & Hers

What I Wore: LAYER UP

After arriving at the Cog Railroad, I was glad I took the weather warnings seriously. A simple flannel and a beanie will not do.

It was October, so I wore Fall clothing, but brought extra clothing with me for the train ride in preparation of the summit, where you’ll want to dress like it’s Winter. I highly recommend merino wool as your base layer, including socks. This is also what I wore in Iceland and I stayed very warm.

I arrived in a moisture-wicking base layer (like one above), a cozy sweater, a long leather coat, and fur UGG boots. Make sure your boots have a good grip on the soles. I also brought a waterproof coat, gloves, and a beanie with me to wear when it started getting cold further up the mountain.

More Ways to Experience Mount Washington

Luckily, there are so many different ways to experience the White Mountains.

Maybe you’re like, “this train experience just isn’t for me” or, “I want a more romantic experience”.. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with a few different options to take in the gorgeous views of Mount Washington’s Presidential Range and all its panoramic beauty.

For Something More Romantic: Gondola Ride

The great thing about this gondola ride is that it’s more intimate and romantic than the train. Not to mention, the dining options are much nicer and more extensive than the cog trains’ snack bar up at the summit. After you reach the top, you have your choice of Switchback Grille, Switchback Bar, or Peaks Cafe.

If you think 1 hour isn’t enough to enjoy the views from above, or maybe you want to take your time and explore on your own with a more guaranteed ride option than the train, this is also a great alternative.

There are also some great hiking trails once you arrive at the summit from beginner friendly to advanced. Choose from 1.6 mi. – 4 mi. roundtrip trails at elevations of 510′ & 1,300′, which are all marked and easy to follow.

The gondola is pet friendly and wheelchair accessible, even in the Winter. More info here.

For Something More Adventurous: Ziplining

For this canopy tour, you’ll be enjoying a zipline adventure from a set of platforms high up in the ancient hemlock trees of the White Mountains connected by 9 zip lines, 2 sky bridges and 3 rappels. You’ll be 165′ off the forest floor ziplining at a 1,000′ elevation, descending from from the top of Rosebrook Canyon to the base of Bretton Woods.

I’ve done this tour, it was such a blast and the views up here are gorgeous, guys. This tour is open all year long.

Common Questions: Mount Washington Cog Railway

Here’s what you need to know before you visit the Cog Railway!

Where are the White Mountains?

In North Central New Hampshire and a small part of Western Maine. The location smack in between Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts makes the “Live Free or Die” state ideal for New England road trips. If you have time, explore other states.

How Much Does it Cost to Ride Mount Washington Cog Railway, What Does it Include? (Tickets & Pricing)

Many argue that the ticket price is a little steep, but in all honesty, you can’t put a price on an experience like this. For me, it was worth every penny.

Roundtrip ticket prices to summit (May to October)

Biodiesel train tickets: Around $91 for adults, $68 for kids 4 – 12, and free for kids under 4. (sit with them on your lap)

Steam train tickets: Around $99 for adults, $63 for kids 4 – 12, under 4 are free.

One-way ticket prices to summit

Around $60

Just a heads up: They sometimes offer seasonal deals. So, you might snag a bargain if you plan ahead! See all tickets and packages here.

Are tickets required in advance?

Reservations are not required, but due to limited capacity, most trains sell out. I recommend booking tickets online in advance, especially during peak seasons (Fall), weekends, holidays, and school breaks, as rides often sell out.

When is the best time to ride Mount Washington Cog Railway?

The ideal time to ride this train is from late spring to early fall (May to October). Mornings generally offer clearer views, while fall—especially from late September to early October—is renowned for its breathtaking foliage. The end of the season, around mid-October, showcases the most striking autumn landscapes, perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit.

Is Mount Washington Cog Railway all year?

The cog railway is open year round. The only difference is that the train to the summit is from May to mid-October (7 days/wk.) while the Winter train to Waumbeck Station is from mid-October to May and only goes up to 4,000’ instead of Mount Washington summit at 5,500’.

During the winter, your stop at Waumbeck Station will have warming huts, a cozy firepit, and complimentary hot refreshments at the summit. Check their schedule.

Does Cog Railway have one-way tickets?

While you can take the Cog Railway down after hiking or ride it up and ski/snowboard back, seats aren’t guaranteed—round-trip ticket holders get first priority. Down-mountain tickets are sold at the summit on a first-come, first-served basis 15 minutes before departure, so hikers should always be ready to descend on foot if no seats are available. Check the forecast!

Worried about not getting a ticket? Consider the Auto Road van tour, which offers one-way shuttles for hikers up or down, also on a first-come, first-served basis.

Is Cog Railway worth the price?

Some felt the Cog Railway tickets were pricey or wanted more time at the summit. Personally, I found the ride unique and worth the price. The time at the summit was enough unless you’re a hardcore hiker, as most will stay indoors due to the cold.

If you want to save money and spend more time at the summit, consider driving the Auto Road or booking a van tour.

I haven’t tried this. Read other’s experiences.

Are pets allowed on the Cog Railway?

Pets are not allowed on the Cog Railway trains or at the summit due to safety concerns and environmental regulations. Service animals are permitted in accordance with the law.

Does the Mount Washington Cog Railway serve food?

No, the Cog Railway itself does not serve food during the ride. However, the Base Station has a café where you can purchase snacks, meals, and drinks before or after your trip. At the summit, there’s a small snack bar offering light refreshments. You can also brings your own snacks and water aboard.

Are there restrooms on the Cog Railway?

No, there are no bathrooms on the Cog Railway trains. However, restrooms are available at the Base Station and at the summit of Mount Washington.

How long is the ride on Mount Washington Cog Railway?

Just under 3 hours roundtrip (1 hour is at the summit).

Are the Trains Handicap Accessible?

The Base Station and Mount Washington Summit Visitor Center are fully accessible, but the historic coaches have narrow aisles, steps, and require mobility-impaired guests to transfer from their wheelchair with assistance.

What Are the Best Seats on Mount Washington Cog Railway?

For the best experience, sit at the back of the train going up for better views and to hear the conductor. On the way down, sit near the engine, as the conductor stands there. Window seats are ideal, but don’t hog them all for your family! You choose your seats when you purchase your ticket on the website.
What can I see at the summit?

From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Canada, and even the Atlantic Ocean on a clear day. There’s also a weather observatory, visitor center, and museum.

  1. From what I’ve heard, the right side is a good choice for the views, especially on the way up. And yes, if they recommend sitting near the engine on the way back, that means toward the front of the train, not the last row. Hope you have a wonderful trip! 🚂

  2. is it better to sit on left side or right side and does sit near engine on way back mean the last row? Thank u!
