If that sounds dreamy, hold on to your hiking boots! In this Under Canvas Acadia Review, I’ll give you the full scoop on glamping in Maine near Acadia National Park, one of the most stunning national parks in the U.S.

To get closer to nature without compromising on comfort, read on! You’ll want to book your stay before you’re done!

From the author: I’m a Maine local and know the state very well. If you have any questions, I respond to comments very quickly!

In this blog, I share…

What is Glamping?

Glamping is camping without the discomfort… think king-sized beds, private en-suite bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and hot showers, all inside safari-style canvas tents.

You know… refined nature… luxe nature. Say it with me now. 😉

At glampsites like Under Canvas Acadia, it’s like staying at a hotel in the middle of the wilderness, with nature right outside your door.

Ready to experience this one-of-a-kind stay? Book your glamping trip at Under Canvas Acadia here.

Which Glamping Type Are You?

Before we jump into the experience, let’s have a little fun—what kind of glamper are you?

  • The Adventure Chaser with a Bougie Bae: You want the outdoors. Your partner is a creature of comfort. Glamping is your compromise. She gets her luxury, you get your wilderness adventure.
  • The Girly Girl Glamper: You like nature, but let’s be honest. Only if it includes a cozy bed and private bathroom. Bonus points if a smores kit and campire is ready for you by the time you return from kayaking.
  • The Luxe Nature Enthusiast: You’ve done the whole roughing-it-in-the-woods thing, and honestly, you’re too old (or just too smart) to be squatting behind a bush with a roll of toilet paper. Just because you want to experience the outdoors doesn’t mean you need to live outdoors, right?

Tell me, I’m curious to know. 😉

First things first I’m a realist.

Love me some nature, but if I’m staying overnight, the girly girl glamper in me wants the convenience of a 2 AM tinkle in my own bathroom a few feet from my bed, the warmth of a heater on a chilly night, and a five star snooze on a plush bed.

But a yummy breakfast overlooking the ocean and free campfire s’mores kits? That’s a big bonus!

Location, Location, Location

Under Canvas Acadia is located in Surry, Maine, a quieter spot about 40 minutes from the hustle of Bar Harbor and the popular trails of Acadia National Park.

You’ll be far enough from the crowds, but close enough to explore the park’s stunning landscapes.

** Hikers, just note that it’s a 35 – 50 minute drive depending on where you want to explore at Acadia National Park.

How to Get to Under Canvas Acadia:

  • By Car: Most guests drive in, and parking at the glampsite is free.
  • By Plane: If you’re flying in, Portland International Jetport is around 2.5 hours from Under Canvas. Bangor International Airport is the closest major airport and about an hour away. For a shorter trip, Bar Harbor Airport is just 10 miles from the site, making it ideal if you’re flying in from nearby cities.

Pro tip: Under Canvas does not have shuttles to transport you. I recommend renting a car, which gives you the flexibility to explore nearby attractions. All airports offer car rentals.

This 3 day tour from New York to Maine is the perfect way to sample the best of New England for those who hate planning, driving or taking a flight! You’ll also visit Boston and Acadia National Park!

The Scenic Drive
The drive to Under Canvas Acadia is unbelievably beautiful with a stark contrast between rocky shores, blue waters, and lush pine trees. They don’t call it “The Pine Tree State” for nothin’. 😉

We even saw deer (or “bambis,” as we call them), which in my family, is considered good luck!

Along the way, you’ll pass seafood shacks, oyster farms, and breweries—don’t skip them, it’s what Maine is known for!

We grabbed a lobster lunch at Perry Long’s Lobster Shack, which has an amazing ocean view, just 13 minutes from the glampsite.

My Glamping Experience: Under Canvas Acadia Review

Whenever I mention living in Maine, people always say, “You’re so lucky.” This glamping trip reminded me just how true that is.

I originally booked Under Canvas at Yellowstone, but a flood closed the park right as I arrived. Luckily, Canvas offered me a credit for a future stay, which I used for a staycation at Under Canvas Acadia, treating my mom to a birthday glamping trip. She’s more of a “nature in small doses” person, but I figured, worst case, at least we were in our neck of the woods… no pun intended. 😉

Welcome to Under Canvas Acadia

Under Canvas has been voted one of the top resorts in the Northeast by Condé Nast Traveler.

Sounds nice, but when I hear “award-winning,” my skepticism kicks in. With the brand’s fame, I wondered if it was just overhyped, like so many viral spots that turn out to be mediocre.

So, I’m here to give you the real scoop! And since I pay for 95% of my travel experiences, I’m not relying on brand collabs to support my livelihood so, I’ll tell you the truth.

Would Under Canvas’ reputation precede them, or would I walk away disappointed?

First Impressions: Arrival and Check-in Experience

Arrival

When we arrived at the glampsite, we were blown away by the stunning views. Some tents had an ocean backdrop, while others were nestled in the forest.

September is a perfect time to visit, with Fall colors starting to show, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate. It rained the day we arrived, leaving us with a gray, overcast sky.

We were determined to make the most of it for my mom’s birthday. The good news? Even with bad weather, there are plenty of indoor activities, which I’ll get to.

Check-in
The staff at Under Canvas has a friendly, summer camp vibe: young, eager, and super welcoming.

After a breezy check-in, you and your luggage will be whisked away to your tent via golf cart.

Check-in is at 3 PM, but you’re welcome to arrive early and enjoy the property, which includes a private beach, outdoor lawn games, communal bonfire pits for s’mores, happy hour, ocean-view lounge chairs, and Embers, the on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Indoors, you can enjoy board games, live music, and a cozy lounge with West Elm furniture, where you can snuggle up with a good book and sip hot cocoa.

My Accommodation: Stargazer with Kids Tent

This setup is perfect for families of 4, with a king-size bed for the parents and a connected kids’ tent featuring 2 twin beds.

Although honestly, you don’t have to be a kid to use the “Kids Tent”. My sister and I are both adults and we fit on the twin mattresses just fine.

Under Canvas Acadia's Stargazer with Kids Tent

I loved the spacious feel. Also, if your kids don’t want to sleep in a tent by themselves, there is enough room to put the 2 twin beds inside the Stargazer tent.

The Atmosphere

As soon as I stepped inside, the little kid in me wanted to change into my jammies and build a cozy pillow fort.

The vibes were definitely a throwback to my childhood. You know, when you’re 5 and want to live in a dollhouse or treehouse… This was the best of both worlds!

The set-up was also surprisingly hotel-like, very tidy and clean, aside from a few dirt marks on the tent walls.

The Stargazing (or Lack Thereof)

The main reason we got this tent is for its stargazing feature… a clear roof panel above the bed that lets you admire the night sky without leaving your warm cocoon.

However, on rainy nights, the skywindow collects droplets, which made stargazing in the tent difficult during our stay. We only stayed 1 night so, didn’t see whether it dried up.

But, I enjoyed stargazing from our private deck just as much anyway. It’s something to ask yourself, whether you want to chance bad weather or just choose a similar tent for less — Deluxe Tent with Kids Tent.

The Sleep

The bed was a five star snooze. Seriously, so comfortable and the bedding was soft and kept us warm all night. Extra blankets were in the wood chest, and once we figured out the heater, we took full advantage of it. You did have to tend to it consistently though.

When planning sleep, the sun rises early here. From May to October, it can rise from 4:48 AM to 7:09 AM.

The Private Bathroom

I really enjoyed having an en-suite bathroom in my tent. After a day of adventure, the first thing you want to do is get in the shower and clean off. With the pull-chain, you got a steady stream of hot water. You also have toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, bodywash) to wash your body and hair, it smelled good. I felt as clean and fresh as a baby. 😉

Comforts & Amenities

  • Light: Handheld and ground lanterns allow you to get back and forth between the common area and your tent.
  • Wi-Fi: Under Canvas encourages disconnecting, but Wi-Fi is available in common areas if needed.
  • USB Battery Packs: 2 USB battery packs in each tent for device charging, though there’s no electricity inside the tents.
  • Housekeeping: Daily housekeeping is available upon request.
  • On-Site Staff 24/7: There is someone on staff at the reception desk anytime of day or night.
  • Concierge Services: The staff can help with local recommendations, activity bookings, and special requests, like planning birthday surprises.
  • Pet-Friendly: You can bring your furry friend along for a small fee. However, they can’t accompany you on the tours and excursions.
  • Sustainability: Under Canvas is committed to eco-friendly practices, with low-flow toilets, eco toiletries, solar-powered lighting, and compostable cutlery.

Tent Location is Everything

Something to note, just because it’s a 100-acre property, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to hear other people. They try to space the tents out enough so you’re not on top of other tents, but not every tent has its own quiet corner.

So, don’t be surprised if you hear your neighbors, whether it’s a baby crying or casual chatter. Keep in mind, quiet hours are between 10 PM – 7 AM.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a romantic getaway, call ahead to request a more secluded tent. Some guests with tents such as the Suite with Kids Tent, said they had more privacy.

If You Can’t Get a Secluded Tent

Earplugs work wonders. Trust me, I’ve got earplugs that even block out the sound of my dad, who snores like a hibernating grizzly bear on our travels now that he refuses to use his sleep apnea machine.

Dining at Under Canvas: Food That’s Far From “Camp Food”

If you think camping means hot dogs and canned beans, think again. This is glamping.

At Under Canvas Acadia, the on-site restaurant, Embers, serves up dishes with local ingredients like wood-fired pizzas, hearty stews, steak, and fresh seasonal salads.

And, because it’s Maine—seafood galore. Fresh-caught lobster, shrimp, clams, you name it. Daily specials give you even more options.

Must-try: A traditional Maine lobster roll… it’s warm, buttery, and packed with fresh lobster. Even better? Bring up to 6 people on this best selling private group tour of Acadia with lobster lunch!

Vegetarian or gluten-free? No problem, Embers has options for you, too.

Breakfast at Under Canvas Acadia's restaurant Embers.

The outdoor seating here is perfect for al fresco dining with views of the water on a first come, first served basis. And what’s a glamping trip without pairing it with a Maine craft beer by the fire? There are also wine and cocktails.

Pro tip: If you’re heading out for the day, take a “Grab-n-Go” picnic from Embers to take on Acadia’s trails.

Our Dining Experience

We really enjoyed our breakfast while sitting by the ocean. The bagel and lox is tasty. Dinner was also good. We ordered a burger and fries, salmon, and steak entrees.

We loved winding down after a day of adventure with dinner and live music indoors. Then, they brought out my mom’s birthday cake for dessert, which we enjoyed with a fun board game in the lounge. It was the perfect day.

What to Do Around Acadia: Adventure Awaits

Acadia National Park offers over 47,000 acres of rugged coastline, forested hills, and pristine lakes. It’s time to take a tour of the top spots of Acadia!

Day Trips

Plan a day trip out to Bar Harbor (40 minutes away) for some shopping, sailing, and dining. Or, try Schoodic Peninsula, which is less crowded than the main part of Acadia, offering stunning coastal views and hiking trails.

For the adventurous, take a ferry out to Isle au Haut. This island offers a more remote and rugged experience of Acadia.

If you have a full day, drive to the Mountains & Lakes region of Maine to explore Rangeley, one of the most beautiful mountain towns with scenic overlooks aplenty for hiking lovers.

On-Site Activities at Under Canvas Acadia

For those days when you prefer to stay close to your tent, Under Canvas offers several on-site activities that are completely complimentary.

  • Live Music: In the evenings, you can enjoy live music in the main lobby tent. There’s a cozy relaxation area with West Elm furnishings where we loved ordering a snack and drinks and just chilled out after a day of adventuring.
  • Yoga Classes: Join a morning yoga session overlooking the ocean and rejuvenate before a day of exploring.
  • Evening Campfires: Gather around the campfire for s’mores and storytelling under the stars.

Tips for a Perfect Glamping Experience

Planning a Birthday with Under Canvas

What truly made our stay unforgettable was the charming birthday set-up I collaborated with Under Canvas to create for my mom. I ordered a cake ($30) and flowers ($75), which greeted us upon arrival.

Under Canvas birthday card

But, the real surprise was a personalized birthday sign, a handwritten card, and a complimentary dessert voucher… all complimentary!

Reach out to Under Canvas 5 days ahead for a custom cake and 3 days for flowers.

Expect to Unplug

This experience is all about being one with nature, which means digital detoxing.

In the tents, expect for there to be no TV, Wi-Fi, or electric outlets. There’s also practically zero cell service. However, the common areas have Wi-Fi if you need to get online.

We were given USB battery packs to charge our devices, but they don’t have enough power to be entirely efficient. For example, you won’t be able to charge your phone while you’re running a fan. Also, don’t expect for the fan to stay on throughout the night.

The staff can swap out your battery packs, but it won’t be until the next day.

Best Time to Visit

Under Canvas Acadia runs from May to October. The ideal time depends on your preferences. Fall (late September to October) brings stunning foliage, while summer offers warmer weather but more crowds.

I visited in September with cool temps in the 60s and a quieter glampsite. It’s a perfect time to go!

Packing Tips: What to Bring

  • Layer Up: Maine’s weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers so you can stay comfortable whether it’s sunny or chilly.
  • Good Footwear: You’ll want sturdy hiking boots for exploring Acadia, and maybe some comfy sandals for relaxing at camp.
  • Power Bank: This best selling portable power bank is solar powered, has 6 chargingslots, and even comes with a built in flashlight!
  • Bug Spray and Sunscreen: Essential for protecting yourself from the elements, especially those pesky mosquitoes.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your adventures.

The Pros and Cons

the reception of Under Canvas Acadia

Pros:

  • All tents feature en-suite bathrooms, private decks, wood-burning stoves, and hot showers.
  • Great location near Acadia, with access to attractions, a private beach, and an on-site restaurant.
  • Eco-friendly, luxurious accommodations with daily housekeeping and pet-friendly options.
  • Extras include daily USB charging packs, complimentary coffee, hot cocoa, tea, s’mores, and activities
  • Attentive staff at reception 24/7
  • Cozy, high-quality bedding and thoughtful touches for special occasions.

Cons:

  • Expensive compared to other camping or glamping options.
  • Limited Wi-Fi and only two USB packs, which don’t last overnight.
  • Tents can be close together, leading to noise, and you may not always get ocean views.
  • No complimentary meals
  • 35-50 minute drive to Acadia National Park.
  • Stargazer tents lose their functionality in rainy weather, and safari tents could use more decor.

Is It Worth It? The Verdict

We paid $640.27 for one night in a Stargazer Tent with Kids Tent in mid-September. While the experience was fun, it is pricey.

Since everything is à la carte, costs can add up, especially with meals not included (not even breakfast).

One guest pointed out, “For the same price, we could’ve stayed at a Relais & Chateaux property with meals and alcohol included.” And while it may be true that you cdon’t have all the amenities of a hotel (I.e. AC, Wi-Fi, etc.), you’re here for the elevated nature experience. Under Canvas knows how to do that.

If you’re wondering whether to give it a try, it’s a fun splurge for a unique stay for a special occasion or one off experience. See tents here.

Alternative Accommodation

If you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, you might want to consider staying at a B&B, Inn, or a vacation rental via Vrbo in/near Bar Harbor. You’ll also be closer to Acadia National Park.

FAQ: Most Asked Questions

Can I bring outside food or alcohol?

Yes, you can bring your own food and drinks, but they cannot be cooked, consumed or stored in or near your tent due to wildlife. There are common areas for enjoying meals and drinks.

Is the campsite accessible for people with disabilities?

While some tents and areas are accessible, not all tents are ADA-compliant. Be sure to check for accessible accommodations when booking.

That’s a Wrap!

  1. Hi Jim, thank you for reading the blog! I’m glad you want to visit. You should make reservations at least a couple months before your desired stay. You can request an ocean view, however, not all tent types have ocean views. You can send Under Canvas and email about requesting an ocean view.

  2. Great review! Sounds like a fun experience even if it is a little pricey and the time of year of your stay is exactly what I’m interested. How far in advance should reservations be made here and can an ocean view be reserved? Thanks.
