As a woman, I can’t think of anything more empowering than being able to travel solo. You figure out new cities and navigate foreign languages while discovering that you’re braver and smarter than you ever gave yourself credit for.
But, let’s be real… Not every destination is safe for solo female travelers. Which is why I created this guide… so you can have the best experiences during your solo travels while staying safe.

After years of traveling across every continent and my fair share of trial and error, here are the best places to travel for solo female travelers in 2026… from one real girl to another. 😉
How I Chose These Places
Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, relaxation, or a mix of everything, there’s something in this guide for every solo female traveler.

But, I practice what I preach and therefore don’t travel solo where it’s not safe. Which is why I rely on numbers…
I’ve selected the following destinations based on a combination of trusted safety data (below) and real, firsthand experiences, from myself and other female travelers I trust. No fluff.
- Global Peace Index (Institute for Economics & Peace)
To double check overall safety and stability, I used the Global Peace Index, which ranks countries based on crime levels, political safety, and peacefulness. Lower score = higher peacefulness/safety.
This female focused index rates countries using 7 key factors: safety for women, travel advisories, risk of thefts & scams, attitudes toward women & harassment, and the Global Peace Index.
- Real Life Travel Insights
Data is helpful, but so is lived experience. I added practical notes on transportation, cultural comfort, language, affordability, and common sense safety tips, which will all help you choose destinations that are great for solo female travelers.
My Personal Experience Traveling Solo
I still remember my first solo trip… to London. I was so anxious I had a full blown panic attack and literally hid in my closet before leaving for the airport, which seems insane years later as I’m writing this.

Then, on the plane, I terrified my ex and my mom back home. My flight disappeared off tracking for a moment, and they thought it had landed early just to get me off. It was a whole situation.
But the moment I stepped off at Heathrow, everything shifted. Alone in a city I’d never been to, with no one to answer to but myself, fear turned into excitement, and uncertainty turned into freedom.
Solo travel has given me confidence, independence, and a deep respect for the world’s beauty. I’ve also walked away stories and memories that I hope stay with me when I’m old and grey.

Best Places to Travel for Solo Female Travelers
I chose these countries because they are the easiest to navigate, comfortable to explore solo, and offer a range of experiences for different interests and travel goals.
These are places where you can walk around at night, dine alone comfortably, and explore freely without stress. I’ve also included hotels in safe areas based on your budget and preferences.
Since I don’t have experience staying in hostels, I recommend that you look to a backpacker blog or ask a Facebook group.

🇮🇸 Iceland: Reykjavik & Countryside (Europe)
For the girl who wants nature, peace and to soak in a geothermal spa while looking up at the Northern Lights.

People always ask me my favorite place I’ve traveled, and honestly… Iceland. Every time. It’s just magic. The scenery is wild… hot springs, black sand beaches with puffins on ledges, waterfalls, ice caves… just bliss.
Half the time I was like, “Wait… is this even real?” Earth has never looked more raw, beautiful, and alive.
Why Iceland is Great for Solo Female Travelers
Iceland is hands down one of the easiest first solo trips on the planet and perfect for women traveling alone. Crime is basically nonexistent, English is widely spoken, and it’s very easy to book guided day tours when you want company.
The country feels relaxed and calm and the people are respectful, which makes solo wandering feel safe.

What to Do
- Soak in Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon.
- Explore Reykjavik’s cozy cafes and street art.
- Meet puffins from Spring-Summer, and even go kayaking with them.
- Take a Northern Lights tour from late Fall to Winter.
- Drive the Golden Circle, chase waterfalls and glaciers.
- Take a ferry to Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), an archipelago off Iceland’s South Coast. I stayed there for a few nights, it was lovely. (future blog)
My Experience in Iceland as a Solo Female Traveler
The safety in Iceland is next level. On my first trip, I explored Reykjavík solo for a few days before joining a women only group tour across the country.

I walked around, hopped between cute cafes, and never once felt nervous. People gave me space, were friendly, and made me feel totally at home.
Even in the tiny towns, locals were kind and happy to help. Later, I rented a car and roadtripped the South Coast with my bestie (future blog coming!), and it was just as amazing.

What to Watch for in Iceland
You don’t need to be as on guard in Iceland as you would in other countries, but I was surprised at how many tourists there were compared to Icelanders. So just be aware of that.

It’s also notoriously one of the more pricier European nations, but strangely enough, I didn’t feel ripped off. This is a unique experience you can’t get anywhere in the world.
But, the primary things to watch out for are natural hazards and the sudden weather changes, rather than human threats. Public transport outside Reykjavik is limited. Roads close in bad weather.
Pack layers and check road conditions before driving in Winter.
Best Time to Visit Iceland
June to early September is the best time to visit… mild weather, open roads, puffins, and those long, golden Icelandic Summer days. Winter is ideal if you’re chasing Northern Lights, icy adventures like ice caves & snow mobiling, and cozy vibes.

Hotel Cost Range in Iceland
Depending on the season and area, most travelers spend $80-$150 USD for a budget stay per night and $150-$300/night for a mid-range hotel, while luxury hotels typically run $400-$700+ per night.
Hotel Tip: Learn from my mistake and book well in advance. Much of Iceland’s hot spots are in rural areas where there aren’t many hotels.
🇮🇪 Ireland: Dublin, Galway & Wild Atlantic Way (Europe)
For the girl who wants friendly pubs, charming countryside, dramatic coasts and a warm welcome.

If wild, beautiful nature isn’t your cup of Brennavin (IYKYK), perhaps you’ll like Ireland, which is a great confidence building first solo trip for travelers and perfect if you’re craving culture, idyllic sceneries, storytelling, music, helpful, approachable locals, and a sense of home.
Why Ireland is Great for Solo Female Travelers
Ireland scores extremely well for safety and hospitality. Locals are famously helpful and English is spoken everywhere. It’s also charming, and surprisingly easy to navigate on your own.
It’s the kind of place where you can drive through the countryside in your rental car, stopping at cozy pubs, castles and cottages without any issues.

What to Do in Ireland
It’s time to have your own Leap Day movie moment…
- Wander Dublin’s Temple Bar, Trinity College, and museum circuit. Or, join a celtic dance party.
- Take a tour of Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse and have a pint! Tickets sell out, buy in advance.
- Drive part of the Wild Atlantic Way and visit the Cliffs of Moher.
- Spend a few nights in Galway for live music.
- Explore coastal villages and stay in a historic castle, pretending you’re in a romance novel.
My Experience in Ireland as a Solo Female Traveler
Ireland won my heart. It’s hard not to love a country that has a good mix of heart and grit… and delightful people with sharp wit and humor.

When the Irish crack a joke at you, take it as a compliment. Expect friendly banter… You’ll most likely be invited into a table conversation.
I always felt safe throughout the country, even dining alone and walking around town in the early evening.. But, be careful in the bigger cities. But mostly, if you follow my tips below, you’ll be grand. 😉
What to Watch for in Ireland
Nightlife districts and busy bars get busy and sometimes rowdy. Stick to well lit main streets at night and use rideshares if you are out late.
Of course, just like anywhere… don’t get so swept away that you’re not taking the usual safety precautions.

In big cities like Dublin in particular, pickpocketing in crowded tourist spots can happen, although I personally haven’t experienced it.
Best Time to Visit Ireland
Late Spring through early Fall (May to September) when there are the most festivals, the weather is mild, days are long, and everything is at its greenest.

🇳🇿 New Zealand: North & South Island (Oceania)
For the adventurous sweetheart who wants thrills without the chaos.

Think epic hikes, postcard beaches, friendly locals, and an adventure culture that never feels sketchy. New Zealand is where you go when you want a big, bold trip that still feels safe from start to finish.
Why New Zealand is Great for Solo Female Travelers

Weather can change quickly. In remote areas, services are sparse. Tell someone your hiking plans.

🇨🇭 Switzerland: Zurich + Lucerne + Interlaken (Europe)
For the elegant traveler who wants alpine beauty, mountains, chocolate and peace of mind in cities.

Then, you go into cities like glitzy Geneva with their expensive watches and swiss chocolate. Luxe nature at its finest.
Why Switzerland is Great for Solo Female Travelers
Swiss public transport is reliable and safe. Tourist towns are welcoming, and the landscape is ideal for solo nature escapes where logistics are sound and well managed.

What to Do in Switzerland
- Ride the Glacier Express.
- Hike around Interlaken, visit Jungfrau.
- Explore Lucerne’s lake and Old Town.
- Enjoy Zurich’s museums and lakeside cafes.
- Try fondue in a traditional Swiss chalet.
- Ice skate on frozen lakes in St. Moritz or Zurich.
My Experience
Everything felt organized and calm. Trains run like clockwork and towns feel safe to walk at any hour. I loved the mix of quiet alpine mornings and fun city outings. It was always an adventure.
What to Watch for in Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the most expensive places in the world with one of the best economies, which means your currency most likely doesn’t win against the exchange rate (Swiss Franc – CHF). Budget for transport and food, and buy the Swiss Travel Pass if you plan multiple train journeys.

Best Time to Visit Switzerland
Switzerland shines year round. Summer (June-August) is ideal for hiking and lakes, while Winter (December-March) is perfect for skiing, cozy mountain lodges, and apres ski vibes. Spring and Fall are quieter, with blooming flowers or colorful foliage and fewer crowds.

What to Watch for in Singapore
Singapore is strict. Follow local laws, and be mindful of local customs. Petty theft is rare but keep standard caution in crowded places.

🇵🇹 Portugal: Lisbon + Porto + Algarve (Europe)
For the girl who loves cute streets, culture, coastlines, good wine, and exploring on foot.

Portugal is one of the best places a girl can travel to period, not just solo. It’s friendly, safe, and full of beautiful spots… and unlike some places (ahem.. you know who you are), you can do it all without spending a fortune.
Why It’s Great for Solo Female Travelers
Portugal is the perfect blend of culture, history, beautiful sights, amazing food, friendly locals, good transport options between cities, and a compact size that makes solo travel low stress. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and cities feel walkable.

What to Do
- Stroll Alfama and Bairro Alto in Lisbon.
- Sip port by the Douro River in Porto.
- Sail down the Douro for the most magnificent sunset you’ve seen.
- Visit Sintra and the Algarve coast for seafood, beaches, picturesque towns, and palaces.

My Experience as a Solo Female Traveler in Portugal
Of all the cities I visited in Portugal, Porto felt the most safe to me. I loved that I could walk straight out of my hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia and walk to the marina at the far end for lunch in an authentic local fishing village.
Or, strolling along the charming cobblestone street, Cais de Gaia, to find a charming restaurant and sipping wine on the Douro River alone. The people were very friendly and helpful anytime I felt unsure.
What to Watch for in Portugal
Petty theft can happen in tourist hot spots and on trams. Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones and hills.
Best Time to Visit Portugal
April to June and September to October for mild weather.

🇯🇵 Japan: Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka (Northeast Asia)
For the girl who wants culture, calm and the world’s most respectful people.

Japan is a dream for solo women. Ultra safe, crazy efficient, endlessly fascinating. You could wander for hours and never feel out of place.
Why Japan is Great for Solo Female Travelers
Japan offers clean, efficient public transport and societal norms that favor civility and respect. Solo dining is normal and comfortable. And thanks to the current exchange rate, Western travelers get noticeably better value on hotels, meals, and experiences than in past years.

What to Do in Japan
- Explore Tokyo neighborhoods Shibuya and Asakusa.
- Visit Kyoto’s temples and tea houses.
- Eat street food in Osaka.
- Relax at an onsen in a ryokan.
- Experience Disneyland Tokyo, foodie heaven!
A Japan Story
Once, a friend left his wallet on a train and it was returned with cash intact, which says a lot. My friends have felt safe exploring late at night and loved the balance between quiet temples and electric city nights.

What to Watch for in Japan
Japan runs pricier than most destinations, but it’s worth every yen. Rush hour trains are intense. In rural areas English signage can be limited, so have offline maps or a translation app.
Best Time to Visit Japan
Cherry blossom season March to April, or Fall colors in October to November.

Expect luxury hotels from $280-500+ USD/night, mid-range around $120-220, and budget stays from $40-80, all clean, comfy, and solo friendly. Ryokan prices vary.
🇻🇳 Vietnam: Hoi An, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (Southeast Asia)
For the girl who wants adventure, food, culture and confidence without blowing her budget.

Vietnam totally surprised me. Beyond the backpacker spots, some areas are unexpectedly luxurious, with boutique hotels, glitzy beachfront or riverside resorts, chic rooftop bars and the kind of vibes that’ll make you not want to leave.
And don’t get me started about the food, which is unreal. The coffee culture is also off the charts and while cities buzz, places like UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An offer peaceful escapes. No matter what you’re after, Vietnam delivers.
Why It’s Great for Solo Female Travelers
Vietnam is honestly one of the most empowering destinations for solo women. It offers incredible value, warm local hospitality, and accessible day tours. Tourist hubs like Hoi An and Da Nang feel safe and walkable, even at night.
Hanoi has beautiful old quarters to wander, and Ho Chi Minh City offers vibrant nightlife.

What to Do
- Stroll Hoi An’s lantern lit ancient town.
- Beach and cafe culture in Da Nang.
- Street food crawl and lake walks in Hanoi.
- Markets, rooftop bars and historical tours in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
- Day trips to Halong Bay from the North.
My Experience
I always feel safe in Vietnam. The locals leave you alone and are helpful and friendly. Communication was never an issue with Google Translate app. I’ve lived in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

One of my favorite cities in Vietnam are Hoi An and Phu Quoc Island, which feel peaceful and safe, perfect for solo walks. In big cities, I used trusted ride app, Grab, which has safety tracker notifications, and avoid dimly lit alleys at night.
What to Watch For
Petty theft and scams are the most common issues, but I’ve never had an issue and have always been cautious. Motorbike traffic is chaotic, always stay alert. Use official ride apps at night like Grab (Vietnam’s Uber), keep belongings zipped, and avoid flashy jewelry.

Best Time to Visit
Vietnam’s weather changes a lot by region, but February to April is the sweet spot almost everywhere… warm, sunny, and easy for travel. September to November can be great in the North and South, but Central Vietnam is in typhoon season then, so expect rain and possible storms.

Hi Lena!
I’m glad you liked the blog. Thanks for your thoughtful comment and great question! For me, practical infrastructure matters more. I want to be able to get assistance or easy access to modern day conveniences. Areas with infrastructure also have more activity and people around, which is typically safer for solo female travelers. 🙂
I liked that the article doesn’t frame “solo-friendly” as just a crime-statistics thing — it’s more about how easy a place feels when you’re alone: walkability, transit that’s intuitive, a culture where dining solo isn’t awkward, and neighborhoods that still feel comfortable after dark. That vibe factor is hard to quantify, but it’s honestly what makes or breaks a trip.
It also made me think about how different “safety” can look depending on your travel style. A city can feel incredibly safe, but if you’re doing a more outdoorsy itinerary — hikes, long train rides, remote coastlines — the friction points change (arrival times, spotty signal, getting stuck without basics, etc.). For anyone who’s traveled solo in more remote facilities or nature-heavy destinations, what ends up mattering most to you: the destination itself, or the practical infrastructure (transit, lodging setup, how easy it is to get help)?
