Only have 1 day in Dublin? Don’t worry… I’ve got the perfect itinerary for you.

Dublin is like that friend who hands you a pint, tells you a wildly exaggerated story, and somehow convinces you to stay out far later than planned.

Kinda like Ted Lasso at the pub… The city is lively, charming, and will somehow make you feel like you’ve been here before… and that you’ll absolutely be back.

How to Get to Dublin ✈️

Dublin is well connected, whether you’re flying in, taking a ferry, or arriving from elsewhere in Ireland.

✈️ By Air: Dublin Airport (DUB) is one of Europe’s busiest, with direct flights from North America, Europe, and beyond.

From the airport, you can take:

  • 🚌 Aircoach (around €8 one way) – A comfortable express bus that gets you to O’Connell Street in about 30 minutes.
  • Dublin Express (€8-€10) – Another solid option, with multiple stops.
  • 🚕 Taxi (€25-€35) – Faster but pricier. Takes 20-30 minutes to city center, depending on traffic.

If you’re arriving from the UK:

⛴️ By Ferry: Ferries arrive from Holyhead (Wales) to Dublin Port. The city center is a short taxi or bus ride away.

If you’re arriving from other Irish cities:

🚗 Driving in Ireland:

  • You can rent a car and use your non-EU driver’s license for up to one year in Ireland.
  • Do NOT drink and drive—it’s illegal, and let’s be real, you’ll want to enjoy a Guinness or two.

🚆 By Train: Irish Rail connects major cities to Dublin’s Heuston and Connolly stations.

🚆 DART & Luas (Trains & Trams) – The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) and Luas (tram system) make it easy to get around.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re only in Dublin for a day, pick a Leap Visitor Card, which offers unlimited public transport for 24 hours for just €8.

What to Wear: Dublin Weather & Packing Tips 🌧

Dublin’s weather is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. It can be sunny, rainy, windy, and chilly, all within the same hour.

🧥 Bring a waterproof jacket (umbrellas won’t survive the wind).
👕 Layer up. Mornings and nights can be cool, even in summer.
👟 Wear comfy shoes, you’ll be walking a lot, and cobblestones are no joke.

Seasonal Notes:
☀️ Summer (June-August): Cool but pleasant (65°F / 18°C).
🍂 Fall (September-November): Crisp air, chilly, damp, and a bit of wind. Perfect sweater weather and cozying up in a pub. (50-60°F / 10-15°C)
❄️ Winter (December-February): Cold and rainy. (45°F / 7°C)
🌷 Spring (March-May): Unpredictable but gorgeous when the sun shines, so layers are your best friend! (45-60°F / 7-16°C)

💡 Key Tip: Always have a light raincoat, even in summer. Dublin’s rain doesn’t ask… it just shows up out of the blue… literally.

Morning: A Proper Irish Start ☕️

Breakfast at Queen of Tarts

I’m a meat-and-potatoes kind of girl. If you are too, Ireland’s hearty diet will be right up your alley. But before jumping into the heavier stuff, start light at Queen of Tarts, a charming little café known for its freshly baked pastries.

Add a strong cup of coffee or a pot of Irish breakfast tea, and you’re ready to take on Dublin.

🍓 Must-Try: Raspberry scone with cream and jam.

Trinity College & The Book of Kells 📖

Once you’re properly caffeinated, head over to Trinity College. This historic university is home to the Book of Kells, a beautifully illustrated manuscript from the 9th century.

The real gem, though, is the Long Room Library, a cathedral of books that will make any book lover’s heart skip a beat.

✨ Fun Fact: The library inspired the Jedi Archives in Star Wars!

A Stroll Through Grafton Street 🎵

On your way to the next stop, take a walk down Grafton Street. This bustling pedestrian street is full of buskers playing everything from Irish folk to pop hits.

It’s also great for window shopping (or actual shopping, if you’re feeling indulgent). 😉

👀 Look Out For: The famous Molly Malone statue.

Dublin Castle: A Quick Royal Detour

If you love history, knights, and castles, you’ll want to swing by Dublin Castle. Take a quick wander through the courtyard and pop into the State Apartments if you have time.

🏰 Look For: The medieval Record Tower, one of the last Viking-era structures in Dublin.

A Walk Along the River Liffey 🌊

Stretch your legs with a scenic walk along the River Liffey. Stop at the Ha’penny Bridge for a classic Dublin photo.

📸 Best View: Sunset over the river is pure magic.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral: A Grand Sight ⛪️

Step inside Ireland’s largest cathedral, St. Patrick’s. As the headquarters of the Church of Ireland, it’s more than just a pretty landmark, it’s a piece of Dublin’s soul.

The towering Gothic architecture and soaring vaulted ceilings make you feel tiny beneath them, while the intricate stained glass and colorful tile work add a splash of drama to this centuries-old masterpiece.

Tour at Dublin’s Famous Brewery: Guinness Storehouse 🍻

My dad and I are big brewery fans, so we were excited to snag last minute tickets to Ireland’s most famous brewery, Guinness Storehouse. (Don’t do what we did, book in advance to secure your ticket and skip long lines)

Whether or not you’re a beer fan, this tour is a must. We opted for a self-guided tour, which worked out great because my dad reads EVERYTHING. No joke, he takes forever, so it was fun wandering at our own pace.

I thought Guinness was just ‘a beer’ until I stood in the Gravity Bar, pint in hand, gazing over all of Dublin. You can also ride to your next destination in style in a horse & carriage waiting outfront.

🔎 Fun Fact: Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease for the brewery. Talk about long-term planning!

Lunch at The Brazen Head 🍲

After all that Guiness, you’re going to get hungry (and thirsty). Head to The Brazen Head. Established in 1198, it’s the oldest pub in Ireland and feels like stepping back in time. Order some traditional Guinness beef stew and soak up the pub’s legendary atmosphere.

🍻 Drink Like a Local: Yes, Guinness tastes better in Ireland, I don’t make the rules.

Evening: Music, Pubs, & Irish Dancing 💃

The Irish House Party 🍀

One of the highlights of my trip was catching an Irish dancing performance. Ever since I saw A Celtic Sojourn in Boston, I had dreamed of seeing traditional Irish music and dance live in Ireland. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

The performance was amazing… we sat right by the stage and watched with some Irish coffees in hand (because when in Dublin…).

What did disappoint was the food poisoning I got somewhere during my hardy 3-course meal, which oddly enough, my family didn’t get sick from. 🤷

I still have no idea if it was the food, but my journey to Greece the next day was not as smooth as I’d hoped. Lesson learned: Maybe don’t go too hard on the heavy Irish fare before a flight.

Dinner at The Church 🔔

If you want a unique atmosphere for dinner or drinks, head to Church, Café, Late Bar and Restaurant on Jervis Street, a beautifully restored 17th-century church… yes, you read that right. You can enjoy coffee, drinks, great Irish food and traditional Irish music.

Temple Bar is touristy, yes. But it’s also fun. And if you’ve never belted out a song with a room full of strangers at The Temple Bar Pub, did you even go to Dublin?

🎻 Best Spot for Music: The Oliver St. John Gogarty pub.

A Nightcap at The Long Hall 🍻

If you prefer a more traditional pub, head to The Long Hall…historic, cozy, and perfect for a final drink.
